Southaven, Mississippi


Southaven is located in DeSoto County in the northwestern part of the U.S. State of Mississippi on the border to Tennessee. The city is in the northernmost corner of Mississippi and is the third largest city in the state. Southaven is a suburb of Memphis, Tennessee. The name derives from the fact that Southaven is located south of Whitehaven, Memphis. The city's population grew by 69% between 2000 and 2010

History Of Southaven - Timeline


Long before the Europeans came to the area, Paleo-Indians and Archaic-Indians lived here. In 1541, the first Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto was the first European to visit the site. De Soto died in that area in 1542. In 1682, French explorers established several small settlements in the area, but the exact locations are not known. In 1783, the United States acquired the area from the British as part of the treaty that ended the American Revolution. In 1836, DeSoto County, in which Southaven is the largest city, was founded.

In 1959, the world-famous novelist, attorney, politician, and activist John Grisham, and his family settled in today's Southaven. Southaven is a very young city. It was incorporated in 1980. The founder of the Holiday Inn chain of hotels, Kemmons Wilson, developed a few residential subdivisions featuring small starter homes just inside the Mississippi. In 1988, Baptist Hospital-DeSoto opened as a two-story hospital.

In 1997, the professional basketball player Terence Davis was born in the city. In 1999, Snowden Grove Park was created. In 2000, the Landers Center arena was built. In 2006, the concert venue Snowden Grove Amphitheater opened. In 2007, Southaven Towne Center shopping mal opened. In 2008, many buildings were damaged when the Super Tuesday tornado hit the city. In 2011, Southaven became the third-largest city in Mississippi. In 2015, the outlet mall Tanger Outlets Southaven opened. Since 2017, the Memphis Hustle is based in Southaven. The American professional basketball team is an affiliate of the Memphis Grizzlies. The basketball team plays their home games at the Landers Center.
